On 28 November 1973, a Wayne County fire chief was travelling along Eddy Road in a lonely rural area just outside the town of Macedon, about thirty miles from Rochester. He spotted a body in a ditch off the side of the road, resting on its side, as if it had been tossed out of a vehicle and rolled down the slope.

The girl had been raped and strangled. She was redressed, but the fasteners on her shirt were broken. Her coat, like Wanda's, was found a short distance from her body.

The Wayne County Sherriff's Office was responsible for the investigation into this murder, since it fell inside their county jurisdiction; however as suspicions of a connection between the cases grew, they worked in cooperation with the Rochester PD, the Monroe County Sherriff's Office and now the New York State Police. Wayne County Sherriff Richard Pisciotti photographed the scene and assisted with removal of the body to Newark State Hospital where the girl's father confirmed her identity: Michelle Maenza.

Christopher Maenza left the hospital in tears. Evidence of the brutality of the assault upon Michelle was writ clear upon her body. The autopsy showed extensive bruising on her face, neck and arm. Michelle's neck was crossed by a clear, deep red line, as well as finger marks; it appeared she had been not only strangled with an object—likely a belt—but the killer had additionally used his hands to choke her.
